SAN FERNANDO : Metrolink Shuttle May Be Expanded

The city is considering expanding its Dial-a-Ride service to ferry residents and workers between various city stops and the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink station once it opens in August.

When the City Council meets Monday, City Engineer Jerry Wedding said he will outline a proposed shuttle program that includes replacing existing Dial-a-Ride vans with a pair of 1993 vans, which hold up to 20 people each, to handle the extra passengers.

“We’re trying to keep the cost down,” said Wedding, who estimated the expanded shuttle service will cost the city an additional $30,000 a year if the council approves the move.

The details of the shuttle’s route still need to be worked out, he said, but it probably will include a stop in the city’s civic center, which includes City Hall and San Fernando Superior Court.

The Sylmar/San Fernando commuter rail station, under construction on a 5.8-acre site at Hubbard and 1st streets, will become the second of five stops on the commuter line from Santa Clarita to downtown Los Angeles.
