CAMARILLO : Council Approves Rose Garden Plan

Share

The Camarillo City Council has approved a volunteer group’s proposal to plant a garden of about 90 roses in Constitution Park next to City Hall.

Upholding a previous recommendation by the city’s Planning Commission, council members approved the Ventura County Rose Society’s proposal on the condition that the volunteers prune and care for the roses.

About 15 Camarillo residents who belong to the society, which has 99 members countywide, will take on the job of planting and maintaining the garden, society member Jeri Collari said.

The group plans to plant the roses, which are being donated by a large nursery wholesaler, early next year.

During each yearly pruning, the volunteers will offer free lessons to residents on caring for roses.

“One of the things we hope people will learn from this garden is that roses are not a great deal of trouble, or they don’t need to be if you grow the right ones,” Collari said.

The garden itself will be extraordinary, Collari said.

“A rose garden is a wonderful thing of beauty,” she said. “And it’s a very healing thing to walk through.”
