Ernie Irvan saved his best move for last on Sunday in the Winston 500, a race Dale Earnhardt would have won had it not stopped raining.

Irvan went from fourth place to first on the last lap to win over Jimmy Spencer.

Earnhardt led Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin as the lap began, but Irvan got help from Spencer, swept down on the inside and passed the leaders.

Wallace, fighting for third, was hit by Earnhardt’s car.

The bump sent Wallace’s car onto the infield grass, where it began flipping wildly. Wallace sustained a broken left wrist.

Earnhardt took the lead just before rain began to fall on Lap 179. It seemed the race would finish under caution, but officials stopped things with four laps to go to wait out the storm.
