COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s 10-Inning Victory Is No. 999 for Garrido

D.C. Olsen’s two-run single in the 10th inning helped Cal State Fullerton to an 11-9 victory over Arizona in a nonconference baseball game Sunday in Tucson.

Fullerton lost the first two games of the series, but the victory was the 999th in the career of Titan Coach Augie Garrido. Garrido, in his 25th season, has a mark of 999-478. He has an opportunity for victory No. 1,000 on Wednesday, when the Titans travel to Cal State Northridge for a 3 p.m. nonconference game.

Fullerton (31-14) plays host to San Jose State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the final Big West Conference series of the season.

The Titans are tied for first place with Long Beach at 14-4. Long Beach, which has already swept three games from Fullerton, plays host to Nevada Reno in a three-game series also starting Friday.

Arizona led, 6-5, going into the ninth, but Fullerton scored three times.

Jeremy Carr led off with a single, stole second and third. Jeff Ferguson walked and Dante Powell’s sacrifice fly scored Carr to tie the score, 6-6.

Jim Betzsold was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Nate Rodriquez’s single gave Fullerton an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dave Peruzzaro singled in one run and another scored on a wild pitch as Arizona (30-21) tied the score in the ninth against Dan Ricabal (10-2), who got the victory.

Carr singled to start the 10th, stole second and was sacrificed to third by Ferguson. Powell was intentionally walked but Tony Banks had an RBI single to put Fullerton ahead, 9-8. A wild pitch moved the runners up before Olsen’s two-run single.

In another nonconference game:

Chapman 14, Grand Canyon 10--Kevin Cook had four hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for visiting Chapman (22-29). Buster Nietzke had three hits, including his sixth home run, and Chris Briones had a three-run home run also for the Panthers.

Corey Guiliano (9-6) pitched eight-plus innings, allowing 10 runs and 18 hits, but got the victory.

In nonconference softball:

Arizona State 1-0, Cal State Fullerton 0-2--Visiting Fullerton scored single runs in the second and fifth of the second game to earn the split. Heidi Robertson had three hits, scored a run and drove in another in the Titans’ victory.

Marcy White and Tiffany Boyd each had two hits in the first game for Fullerton (31-17).
