Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain beat Steffi Graf of Germany, 6-3, 6-3, Sunday at Hamburg, Germany, to win a Citizen Cup tennis tournament that was overshadowed by the stabbing of Monica Seles, the world’s top-ranked woman player.

Graf, seeded No. 2, was seeking a record seventh consecutive title in Hamburg.

“It’s been a difficult week, especially for me,” Graf said. “I hope Monica gets well soon and gets over the whole thing.”

“I hope she gets well soon and comes back,” Sanchez Vicario said.

Seles was stabbed in the back Friday by a man described by police as a mentally disturbed Graf fan who could not stand seeing Seles dominate.
