Top-seeded Mark Woodforde of Australia retired because of heat exhaustion, giving Patrick McEnroe a first-round victory in the $260,000 USTA Men’s Clay Courts of Tampa.
McEnroe led, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-0, and was on his third deuce of the fifth game when Woodforde walked off the court, sat down and buried his head in a towel.
