NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Pomona Women Gear Up for Run at Tennis Title

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s tennis team will attempt to win its third consecutive national title this weekend when the Broncos participate in the NCAA Division II championships at the Industry Hills Sheraton Resort.

UC Davis (20-3) is seeded first in the eight-team tournament that will be played Friday through Sunday. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (20-9) is seeded second, followed by Pomona (12-7) and Grand Canyon (12-8). At-large entries include Abilene Christian (13-6), Northern Colorado (19-5), Cal State Bakersfield (11-8) and Pace (13-3).

A 32-player singles tournament and 16-team doubles competition will be seeded Sunday and will be played Monday through Thursday.

Rebecca Huereque and Wendy Gutierrez of Pomona will play singles. Huereque will team with Tracy Nguyen, and Gutierrez will combine with Dee Mercuri for doubles.

The Azusa Pacific baseball team clinched its fourth consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference championship with a 9-3 victory over Westmont last week.

The Cougars, under Coach Tony Barbone, entered the week 29-7-1 and 14-4 in the GSAC and ranked fifth in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics. Azusa Pacific concludes its regular season with a doubleheader Saturday against Cal Baptist.

Barbone won the 250th game of his career when the Cougars beat Cal State Los Angeles, 15-1, last week. Barbone’s record is 251-127-1 in eight seasons at Azusa Pacific.

Doug Barnett, Azusa Pacific’s offensive coordinator for the past five seasons, has been named football coach at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont.

Rocky Mountain is an NAIA Division II school and a member of the six-member Frontier Conference.

Barnett also coaches the Azusa Pacific softball team, which will attempt to win its third consecutive District 3 championship when the Cougars (37-10) travel to Southern California College for a playoff tournament that begins Friday.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team concludes its regular season this week, needing some help from Cal State San Bernardino and UC Riverside to win the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship.

Pomona is 15-12 in the CCAA and in second place behind Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (15-9) with three games left against Cal State Dominguez Hills. San Luis Obispo has six games left against San Bernardino and Riverside.

Alex Acosta, who had a 108-58 record as boys’ basketball coach at Bishop Amat from 1986-1992, has returned to the position after a one-year stint as an assistant at Citrus College.

Acosta, 33, was an All-Southern Section player for Bishop Amat in 1978. He has been teaching at the school for 10 years.

The city of Azusa is sponsoring summer youth basketball leagues for boys and girls ages 13-15.

Practices and games will take place at the Memorial Park Recreation Center gymnasium weekday afternoons and evenings.

The Challengers Angling Club is seeking fisherman interested in joining the organization, which was established in 1953.

The club sponsors trips once a month from February through October, and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month for dinner and a program at Covina Bowl in Covina.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division, and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race walking and tennis for handicapped athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
