Will Thurston, softball coach at Moorpark College, returned home Tuesday night from a two-day stay at Westlake Medical Center after passing out Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

“It’s one of those things that they aren’t quite sure (what happened),” Thurston said. “All they know is I have some sort of deficiency with the sugar in my blood. Probably hypoglycemia.”

Thurston, 36, collapsed soon after arriving with his sons, Kyle, 7, and Nick, 5, for the Dodger game against Philadelphia.

He was taken by ambulance to County-USC Medical Center and transferred to the Westlake hospital, where he underwent a battery of tests.

“One minute the Dodgers are running to the field and then all I remember is waking up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, worried about my boys,” Thurston said. “The security people at the stadium took good care of them until my wife picked them up.”

Thurston won’t be back with the softball team until next week, when the Raiders open play in the Southern California regionals. Moorpark (15-14, 8-2) finished in a tie for first place in the Western State Conference with College of the Canyons.

He missed Wednesday’s WSC playoff game against Canyons to determine the conference’s first-place entry in the regionals. The Raiders won, 3-2, in 11 innings. Assistants De Dow and Darrell Fitzpatrick coached the team.

Since Thurston took over the program in 1984, the Raiders have won nine WSC championships, including the last seven in a row. They finished third in the state in 1989 and fifth in 1990. Thurston, a former running back at Thousand Oaks High, Moorpark College and Cal State Northridge, also is the offensive coordinator for the Raider football team.

Thurston said the doctors want him to relax for the next few days and watch his diet. He said the incident was totally unexpected.

“I’ve always been in pretty good (physical) shape,” he said. “It struck everyone by surprise, including myself.”
