Robert De Niro, 71, an accomplished painter and father of the actor. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., De Niro studied with the painter Hans Hoffmann and attended Black Mountain College in Asheville, N.Y. His work is exhibited by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum and by Washington’s Hirshhorn Museum. His only child, actor Robert De Niro, frequently gave friends his father’s paintings as gifts. On Monday in New York of cancer.
