Two Thousand Oaks teen-agers were in Juvenile Hall on Friday after stealing a car and leading police on a three-minute pursuit, then abandoning the vehicle on a dead-end street and fleeing into a hilly neighborhood, authorities said.

The youths, a 14-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, were found by two sheriff’s deputies and a Simi Valley officer early Thursday with the help of police dogs.

The girl was found in an open garage and the boy was crouched in shrubbery on a hillside near the end of Lone Oak Road, Sgt. Ray Nagel said.

The incident began when Deputy Tim Hagel saw the teen-agers turning out of an alley behind businesses in the 400 block of Thousand Oaks Boulevard about 1:25 a.m., authorities said.

Suspecting they might have been casing the area for a break-in, Hagel began following them. When the deputy tried to pull them over for speeding, the driver refused to stop, authorities said.

At speeds up to 65 m.p.h., the youths were chased east on Thousand Oaks Boulevard, north on Erbes Road, east on Hillcrest Drive, then north on Lone Oak Road until the street ended, Nagel said.

The youths later admitted stealing the 1993 Chevy Lumina from the parking lot of a restaurant in Simi Valley, Nagel said.

Both suspects were booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of auto theft and resisting arrest.
