U.S. Olympians to Earn $15,000 for Gold Medal
Bonuses of $15,000 for each gold medal will be paid to U.S. Olympic athletes under a plan unveiled Tuesday.
Officials said the four-year, $7.6-million program might keep them competing instead of forsaking sports for jobs.
“This is not intended as a prize,” said Harvey Schiller, executive director of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
The plan would also pay silver medalists $10,000 and bronze medalists $7,500, beginning with next year’s Winter Games.
A fourth-place finish earns $5,000, and a significant performance improvement below that gets an athlete $1,000.
The plan that must be approved by the USOC’s board of directors next month.
