More than 100 Ventura College students tonight will be awarded scholarships totaling $130,000, made available through the Ventura College Foundation, individual donors, memorials and private organizations, officials said.

The fifth annual Ventura College Student Awards Reception will be at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Ventura.

Two of the largest scholarships will be awarded to Michelle Duran of Ojai and Maria Monteil-Blackshear of Santa Paula, who will receive Mary Guthrie Scholarships for students planning careers as teachers.

Duran, 26, and Monteil-Blackshear, 34, each will receive $3,000 a year for three years to pursue teaching degrees at UC Santa Barbara, officials said.

Moorpark College will hold its annual scholarship ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the campus cafeteria, where more than 50 students will receive scholarships and awards, officials said. No dollar figure was available.

At Oxnard College, 42 students received scholarships donated by businesses and individuals totaling about $18,000 at a ceremony May 2.

Cal Lutheran University held its ceremony last month, granting more than $400,000 in privately financed scholarships to 160 students, said Della Greenlee, director of grants and scholarships.

“That number grows every year, because we work at it,” Greenlee said.
