Simpson Races to Share of Lead
Calling it kind of a letdown after participating earlier in the week in a stock car driving school, Scott Simpson took a share of the first-round lead Thursday in the Byron Nelson Classic at Irving, Tex.
Simpson shot a 65, five under par, tying him with Dan Forsman and hometown rookie Russell Beiersdorf.
Simpson made it clear, however, that his relative lack of enthusiasm for a seven-birdie effort over the Tournament Players Club at Las Colinas was only in comparison with his first visit to the left-hand seat of a racing stock car.
“One of the most fun things I ever did,” Simpson said of his visit to the driving school.
He said he got to 160 m.p.h. at the Texas International Speedway.
