Mater Dei Names Hauser as Its Girls’ Basketball Coach

Mary Gainey Hauser has been named girls’ basketball coach at Mater Dei High School, school officials announced.

Hauser was the junior varsity coach at Mater Dei in 1991-92. The Monarchs’ junior varsity team finished 26-0 and won the Angelus League championship. Last fall, she was the co-coach for the Mater Dei cross-country team.

David Berney, a 6-foot setter on the Laguna Beach High School boys’ volleyball team, signed a letter of intent to attend USC. Berney, a four-year varsity starter who helped the Artists win their fifth consecutive Pacific Coast League championship, chose USC over Penn State and George Mason.

Laguna Beach, which has a 39-game league winning streak, opened the Division I playoffs Friday night by beating El Toro.

North and South coaches have been chosen for the all-star softball game, scheduled for 7 p.m. June 9 at Brea-Olinda High School.

Sharen Caperton, who led Brea (18-8, 10-0 in league) to its second Orange League title in three seasons, will lead the North team. Her assistants will be Rob Weil of Pacifica and Joe Gonzalez of Foothill.

The South will be directed by Shelley Luth, who guided Marina (21-3, 13-1), the county’s third-ranked team, to the Sunset League championship. Her assistants will be Carey Baker of Fountain Valley and Andrea Willer of Marina.

El Modena pitcher Alexis Beckman had eight consecutive shutouts before Thursday’s 2-0 loss to Foothill. Although it was quite a streak, she was a long way from the national record of 23, set by Tracy Compton of Santa Maria Righetti in 1980-81. Beckman will play at Boston College next year.

Southern California Christian knows that worst-to-first feeling. After finishing last the past three years in the Arrowhead League, the Flames (18-2, 11-1) outscored opponents 106-11 during a 12-game winning streak, including an 8-7 victory in eight innings Thursday over Riverside La Sierra Academy. During that 12-game winning streak, six games were called because of the 10-run mercy rule.
