No Damage as 3 Aftershocks Rattle Bishop
Three aftershocks, two of them 10 minutes apart, rumbled along this stretch of the California-Nevada border Tuesday on the heels of Monday’s strong earthquake in the region.
No damage or injuries were reported.
Tuesday’s temblors measured magnitude 4.8, 4.4 and 3.4, and struck at 4:48 p.m., 4:58 p.m. and 8:17 p.m. All were centered about 40 miles east-southeast of Bishop. They were among 200 aftershocks recorded since Monday’s 6.0 quake, according to Caltech in Pasadena.
Also on Tuesday, quakes struck Alaska, and near the Southern California mountain town of Wrightwood. The Alaska quake, centered 25 miles south of Anchorage, measured 5.2, and the Wrightwood quake measured magnitude 3.5, according to Caltech seismologist Kate Hutton.
“They are unconnected to (Monday’s) quake,” Hutton said.
Monday’s was the strongest quake in California since the June 28, 1992, Landers and Big Bear quakes, with magnitudes 7.6 and 6.7 respectively.
