AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Valenzuela Gives Up Two Hits, Beats Indians

Fernando Valenzuela gave up only two hits for his first victory since 1990, leading the Baltimore Orioles past the Cleveland Indians, 7-0, at Baltimore on Tuesday night in a game called because of rain during he eighth inning.

Valenzuela (1-3), making his seventh appearance in his comeback with the Orioles, walked three and struck out six. He gave up a fourth-inning single by Felix Fermin and an eighth-inning double by Glenallen Hill.

It was Valenzuela’s first victory since he beat Cincinnati as a Dodger on Sept. 14, 1990. It was his first shutout since June 29, 1990, when he pitched a no-hitter against St. Louis.

The game was stopped after Cleveland batted in the eighth.

The Orioles scored three runs during the third inning against Matt Young (0-2) and added four during the seventh.

Baltimore had scored only nine runs in Valenzuela’s five previous starts this season.

New York 5, Minnesota 3--Danny Tartabull doubled and scored the go-ahead run during the sixth inning, helping Jim Abbott and the Yankees beat the Twins at Minneapolis.

The Twins loaded the bases during the ninth inning, but Steve Farr struck out Dave Winfield to end the game.

Abbott (3-5) gave up nine hits in eight innings.

Mike Trombley (2-2) gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Detroit 5, Milwaukee 1--Mickey Tettleton hit a bases-loaded triple during the first inning to lead the Tigers at Milwaukee.

Lou Whitaker reached on an infield hit, Travis Fryman singled and Cecil Fielder walked to load the bases. With two out, Tettleton hit a drive off the fence in right-center field against Cal Eldred (4-5).

Mark Leiter (2-1) gave up six hits in 8 1/3 innings.

Texas 3, Seattle 2--Doug Strange hit a two-run homer during the seventh inning to lift the Rangers over the Mariners at Arlington, Tex.

After a single by Rafael Palmeiro, Strange hit his second home run of the season against Rich DeLucia (1-3).

Brian Bohanon (2-0) retired one batter and got the victory.

Kansas City 6, Oakland 1--Mark Gardner combined with Bill Sampen on a four-hitter to lead the Royals at Kansas City.

The Royals, who did not get their 17th victory last year until May 30, improved to 17-19.

Gardner (3-2) had a shutout until Troy Neel’s homer during the seventh.

The Royals scored four runs against Bob Welch (4-3) during the sixth.
