SOUTHERN SECTION TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS : GIRLS’ PREVIEW

Share

* Saturday’s schedule: at Cerritos College. Field events, 11 a.m.; running events, 1 p.m.

* Outlook: Can Cavetra Mitchell of Los Alamitos win the Division II team championship by herself? If the Griffins’ 400-meter relay team had qualified for the finals, it might have been possible. But that didn’t happen and now it seems a stretch. Mitchell, who could win the 100, 200 and 100-meter high hurdles, figures to provide many of the division’s highlights. Last week, she was the top qualifier in the 100 (12.20) and 200 (24.90) and second-fastest in the hurdles (15.24). She won’t meet Thousand Oaks’ Marion Jones, who runs in the Division I, until the Masters meet next week. There are three other possible winners in the division--Kristy Kierulff of Esperanza in the high jump, Gina Heads of Newport Harbor in the shotput and Andrea Bill of University in the discus. Kierulff won the State title as a freshman in 1992 and has a best of 5-8 this year. Keep an eye on Newport Harbor’s Tina Bowman, who has jumped a section-leading 5-9 1/4 this year. Heads was the leading qualifier in the shotput (41-9) and No. 2 behind Bill in the discus. Bill defeated Heads, 137-9 to 133-8. They figure to finish 1-2 in the final. In the division I, Christie Engesser of Ocean View seems poised to cap a brilliant four-year track career. Engesser, second in the State meet 800 last year, is a big favorite. Her season-best of 2:13.14 is the best time in the section and the second-best in the state, behind a 2:11.69 clocking by ’92 State champion Miesha Marzell of Oakland Bishop O’Dowd.
