UC IRVINE NOTES : Catala Gets Olympic Festival Berth

Former UC Irvine basketball player Yvonne Catala has earned a spot on the West team handball squad for the U.S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Tex., in July.

Catala, an All-Big West honorable-mention pick, was one of four newcomers to make the team. She finished her Irvine basketball career last season with 1,333 career points, second-highest in school history.

Paul Polowski, a 6-2 forward from Orange Coast College, has signed to play on Irvine’s soccer team. Polowski, a Fountain Valley High graduate, was an all-Orange Empire Conference first-team selection last season.

Former UC Irvine standout Gary Figueroa will be inducted into the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 5. Figueroa was a three-time All-American at Irvine in the mid-1970s and was a member of the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic teams.
