HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL / SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Garza Caps Comeback for Notre Dame, 6-5

Chris Garza’s two-run double in the sixth inning gave Notre Dame High a 6-5 victory over Fountain Valley Tuesday in the second round of the Southern Section Division I baseball playoffs at Sherman Oaks.

Fountain Valley (23-5) led, 3-0, before Francisco Dongo hit a solo home run in the third for Notre Dame (21-5).

Trailing, 5-2, the Knights made it close to with two runs in the fifth inning.

Garza and Joey Orlando went two for three for Notre Dame.

In other Division I second-round games:

Ocean View 9, Hoover 7--The Tornadoes trailed, 8-0, after two innings before making the score respectable in their loss at Ocean View.

The Seahawks (22-8) had to hold on at the finish despite scoring seven runs in the first inning.

Hoover (19-6) charged back behind catcher Nate Dishington, who was three for three with two home runs (Nos. 9 and 10) and four runs batted in.

Dishington was seven for seven with nine RBIs in the Tornadoes’ two playoff games. Robert Ruiz also played a strong game, going two for four with his second homer, a double and two RBIs.

“We fought back,” Hoover Coach Bob Cooper said. “That has been mark of our whole season. We didn’t put our heads down.”

Hesperia 9, Glendale 8--The Scorpions scored in the top of the 10th inning to earn a playoff victory at Glendale.

Guy Blackwell went two for five with three RBIs for the Dynamiters (13-11), who upset defending champion Millikan in the first round. David Nolan (two for five) and Juan Chavez (two for four) each drove in one run.

David Gantt (9-4), the third Glendale pitcher, took the loss.

DIVISION IV

Sierra Vista 4, Calabasas 0--Sophomore left-hander Anthony Flores tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to pace Sierra Vista (19-5) at Calabasas.

Josh Morton and Billy Hoover had the only hits for Calabasas (15-6-1) against Flores (7-1), who hit two batters, walked one and allowed only five Coyotes to reach base.

DIVISION V

Desert 9, Buckley 8--Taryll Jackson’s three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth cut a four-run deficit to one for Buckley, but the Griffins fell short.

T.J. Jackson, Taryll’s brother, was two for four with two RBIs for Buckley (15-9), which had its five-game winning streak snapped.

T.J. Jackson’s solo home run in the first trimmed Buckley’s deficit to 2-1, and his run-scoring double in the second gave the Griffins a short-lived 3-2 lead.

West Valley 6, L.A. Baptist 3--Zack Hernandez and Trenton Mooney each had two hits for L.A. Baptist, but West Valley scored five runs in the fifth to snap a 1-1 tie at West Valley.

Nate Laufer (5-4), a junior right-hander, took the loss for L.A. Baptist (19-6).

Laufer gave up three hits, struck out four, walked two and hit two batters while being charged with four runs.

Brentwood 1, Fillmore 0--Jeremy Milken singled in the sixth inning to drive David Forst from third base with the only run in the Eagles’ playoff victory at Brentwood.

Fillmore starter Jaime Duran (7-3) allowed only two hits. Tri-Valley League champion Fillmore finished 15-5.
