While You’re at It, Replay These USC Games

Share

Now that Pacific 10 Conference Commissioner Thomas Hansen has opened up Pandora’s Box by ordering the ending of a UCLA-USC baseball game replayed from the point of a rules violation, I would like to submit a list of six USC football games that should be replayed because of serious errors by game officials.

--USC vs. Michigan (1980 Rose Bowl): Make the score 10-10, by taking Charles White’s phantom touchdown off the board.

--USC vs. Notre Dame (1982): Give the Irish a 13-10 lead and the ball in the final minute after Michael Harper’s phantom touchdown.

--UCLA vs. USC: There are at least four games from this series that need to be corrected, starting in 1969, when the Trojans benefited from a bogus pass-interference call and Sam Dickerson’s out-of-bounds catch to win. Give UCLA the ball and a 12-7 lead. From 1977 take away the horrible pass-interference call against Johnny Lynn and give UCLA a 27-26 lead. And finally, take away two touchdowns that were not scored in the same corner of the Coliseum end zone by Erik Affholter (1987) and Gary Welman (1989). The former gave USC a 17-13 lead with two minutes to play in a game for the Rose Bowl berth, while the latter was the only touchdown the Trojans scored in a 10-10 tie.
