Is the Basketball Program Bigger Than the School?

Share

Regarding the letter on May 15 that reprimanded The Times and stated that the article on Crenshaw High’s basketball program did nothing but tarnish the program, I have a few questions.

Where do integrity and values come into play and when do we as adults enable our children to develop a sense of the same?

Shouldn’t we be asking, “Does the basketball program tarnish the reputation of the school” as our primary concern, and don’t these young men go to school for an education first?

It’s a fine example of the tail wagging the dog once again. When do administrators start to hold their staff accountable for their actions and help them to see that their program is only one small piece of the puzzle? Or have schools allowed a single item to become their identity at the risk of the remainder of the rest of the student body that the institution was designed to serve?
