Mike Pierce of Shenandoah High School hit three home runs in the same inning Thursday to break a record held by Ted Williams and 33 others.

Pierce set the record in Shenandoah’s 18-run first inning, which led to a 23-2 victory at Union High.

“I told him when he went up to bat the third time, ‘I dare you,’ ” Shenandoah Coach Todd Salkoski said, “and he hit the first pitch for a homer.”

The 1993 edition of the National High School Sports Record Book lists the record for home runs in an inning as two. Williams did it when he played at San Diego Hoover High.

Shenandoah is located in Middletown, about 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
