HUNTINGTON BEACH : Outreach Program Seeks Citizen Input

Share

City officials will go door to door to find out how residents feel about city issues and operations in a new community outreach program scheduled to start later this month.

The program will also include neighborhood meetings and a community survey.

“When I came in as mayor, we were looking for a mechanism to get more participation in local government,” Mayor Grace Winchell said. “We wanted to develop a sense of community and a feeling among residents that they belong to the city and the city belongs to them.”

The outreach program will be all-encompassing and deal with any overriding concerns and issues the people may have, she said.

The city will be divided into five areas and separate community meetings will be scheduled in each area this year and next year. Surveys will be sent to a random sample of residents in advance of the meetings.

After public comments and individual visits, city officials will reconvene at the community meeting place to summarize the residents’ input and make recommendations for a course of action.

The first meeting is scheduled for June 19 at Ralph E. Hawes School, 9682 Yellowstone Drive. Residents to be represented at the first meeting live in an area bounded by the Santa Ana River to the east; Garfield Avenue to the north; Adams Avenue and Lake Street to the west; and Pacific Coast Highway to the south.

Other meetings are tentatively scheduled for September and November this year and March and June of 1994.
