CALABASAS : Renovation Planned for Historic Area

Share

In an effort to heighten the profile of the city’s historic core, Calabasas officials plan to spruce up Old Town with wooden sidewalks, period street lights and old-fashioned signs, furniture and planters.

“It’s going to be, ‘Mosey on down to Old Town and hitch up your horse,’ ” Calabasas Community Development Director Steve Harris said.

Although details of the $38,000 project have not been worked out, the renovation will be designed to enhance the Old West style of the two-block stretch of Calabasas Road between Mulholland Drive and Park Granada Boulevard, an area that a century ago lured travelers to its saloons and dance halls.

Consultants for the project are expected to attend a festival in Old Town on June 26, in part to survey local residents for ideas. Planning for the renovation, including public hearings, will very likely take about six months, with construction slated for 1994.

“This is an area of town that everybody in town identifies with and wants to protect and enhance,” he said. “There is also the desire to encourage more shopping in Old Town, and the next step will be to work on a marketing or advertising project for the area.”

The plan also will include guidelines for merchants within Old Town. Construction is expected to begin next year.
