“Cliffhanger” hung on to the number-one perch at the box office for a second weekend, but its days there are numbered. Come Friday, count on it to lose its grip as Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur thriller “Jurassic Park” hits theaters.

“Cliffhanger,” which features Sylvester Stallone as a member of a rescue team and several suspenseful mountain climbing sequences, drew an estimated $11.2 million on 2,337 screens, for a 10-day total of $36.2 million. It led all films a week ago during the long Memorial Day weekend when it grossed $20.4 million. And for two weekends now it has owned the usually large audience that goes out for action/adventure films.

Why that audience didn’t turn out in even larger numbers has raised speculation among film industry insiders who thought “Cliffhanger” might open to even better grosses. Some believe the audience is holding back for “Jurassic Park,” based on the popular Michael Crichton novel, and then the June 18 opening of “Last Action Hero,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first film since the 1991 summer blockbuster “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” Both films are widely believed to be Hollywood’s strongest entries for the summer season.

TriStar Pictures, which distributes “Cliffhanger,” was elated after the film’s first weekend when it scored the highest gross for a non-sequel on any Memorial Day weekend. On Sunday, a studio spokesman said the film had a “normal drop” in business of about 31% for its second Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Overall business declined predictably after the holiday weekend surge, according to box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co. The estimated grosses for the Top 10 films were down about 30%. Final figures will be released today.

Repeating its second-place finish from Memorial Day was the comedy “Made in America” from Warner Bros. The movie, co-starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson, grossed an estimated$7.3 million on about 2,000 screens, also off about 30% from the preceding weekend. To date, the movie has grossed about $21.4 million.

In third was the new romantic thriller “Guilty as Sin,” with Rebecca De Mornay and Don Johnson, from Walt Disney Studios. It drew $5.7 million on 1,132 screens.

In fourth was Warner Bros.’ political comedy “Dave.” It grossed $4.8 million for a total of $47 million after five weekends.

“Hot Shots! Part Deux” scored fifth with $4.4 million, and after three weekends the 20th Century Fox release has accumulated $27 million.

Two other Disney Co. films produced only so-so numbers. “Super Mario Bros.” grossed $4 million for sixth place and “Life With Mikey,” featuring Michael J. Fox, opened in eighth place with a mediocre $3.5 million on 1,361 screens.

“Sliver,” with Sharon Stone, William Baldwin and Tom Berenger, continued to lose steam:$3.2 million, or seventh place, for the Paramount Pictures’ release that only two weeks ago ranked No. 1.

The gritty urban story “Menace II Society” came in ninth with $3.3 million on only 513 screens. The New Line Films feature has grossed $9 million to date.

Ranked 10th was Paramount’s “Indecent Proposal,” with $1.8 million, inching its way toward the $100-million mark. The film starring Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, has collected $95 million after nine weeks.
