OJAI : City to Give Dismantled Fort to Boy Scouts

Eager to rid itself of an unwanted donation, the Ojai City Council this week agreed to give a dismantled three-story pine fort to the Boy Scouts.

A Mira Monte man four years ago gave the city the 3,000-square-foot replica of a fort on Tom Sawyer’s Island in Disneyland.

The city then paid $7,500 to disassemble the fort and stack the parts in a yard behind City Hall.

Ojai officials opened bidding on the fort several weeks ago and decided to donate the piles of rough-hewn logs after receiving only one offer, for $1,300.

The Boy Scouts are now seeking funds to haul the disassembled structure, which is about the size of a four-bedroom house, to their 1830s-style village at Lockwood Valley in Los Padres National Forest.
