The promising band One Hit Wonder, fronted by Tender Fury alumni Dan Root and Robbie Allen, will make its recording debut next month with a vinyl EP on the Doctor Dream label. “L.A.,” inspired by last year’s riots, will be the A-side, backed by “Shut Up” and “Brazil.”

Instead of signing a longer-term deal with Doctor Dream, Allen said, the band intends to use the single as a calling card with which to approach bigger labels. One Hit Wonder shares a bill with Burnin’ Groove at Linda’s Doll Hut in Anaheim on June 25.

The One Hit Wonder release will be part of a Doctor Dream series called “Your Town vs. the World,” for which the label is seeking out suburban, punk-influenced bands from around the country to be showcased on limited-edition vinyl releases. Each record will be identified by the band’s hometown: Joyride’s series-launching single, released earlier this year, was “Fullerton vs. the World;” One Hit Wonder’s will be called “Long Beach vs. the World.” Future “Your Town” singles are planned by the Grabbers and Bitch Funky Sex Machine, both from Huntington Beach, and the Crullers from the Boston suburb of Allston, Mass.

Doctor Dream bands will be doing some good in the world as well as opposing it: A lineup of acts on the Orange-based label will play a benefit for the Make A Wish Foundation for terminally ill children at Bogart’s July 3. Joyride, Bitch Funky Sex Machine, the Swamp Zombies, the Grabbers and the Trouble Dolls will perform.
