IRVINE : City to Construct 8 Sidewalk Ramps

Share

The city will spend $35,000 to install eight sidewalk ramps at city intersections, bringing to more than 200 the number of sidewalks that the city has altered in the past decade to accommodate wheelchairs.

Several sidewalks in Woodbridge village are slated for construction, as are three along Culver Drive.

Most of the previous work has been done in older villages, such as Woodbridge and University Park, that were built before Irvine’s 1971 incorporation and before wheelchair-access ramps on sidewalks were required.

The city’s goal is to eventually build ramps on every sidewalk in the city, said Robert A. Graham, Irvine’s director of public works. The city tries to reconstruct older sidewalks whenever major roadwork is done, he said.

When the new ramps are completed, people who use wheelchairs as well as frail seniors and others with walking problems will be able to cross the intersections with greater ease.

The City Council approved the retrofitting plan in May. Some of the money for the project will come from Measure M funds.
