Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday approved a $370,000 grant to help expand the kitchen at the Antelope Valley Senior Citizens Center in Lancaster.

By expanding the center’s kitchen to 13,900 square feet, administrators hope to double the number of meals they can serve each day from 600 to 1,200. The center provides meals for $1.25 to elderly residents of the Antelope Valley.

Meals are now prepared at the Mira Loma Jail, but the jail has not always been able to cook enough. Also, county officials are concerned that the jail might be closed by budget cuts.

The city of Lancaster and the Lancaster Redevelopment Agency will pay the remainder of the $660,000 cost of the kitchen expansion. The county-owned center is at 777 W. Jackman Ave.
