A 29-year-old Ventura man was tackled and arrested by police Tuesday after he allegedly threatened to harm his estranged wife, shot at two vehicles in an apparent fit of jealousy and then holed up in his brother’s house with a shotgun, police said.

Deric Robin Hobson, who lives on Ventura’s east end, was taken into custody about 7:15 p.m. and booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and firing at an unoccupied vehicle, Ventura Police Lt. Don Arth said. Hobson’s bail was set at $250,000.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when Hobson went to a house at 5938 Ralston St. where his estranged wife, Kimberly Paige Hobson, 25, lives with her mother. There, Hobson yelled for his ex-wife, then kicked the door down and began searching the house for her, Arth said.

Kimberly Hobson had gone to the grocery store and was not home, according to one of her friends. Inside the house, Hobson allegedly made threats that he planned to harm his estranged wife and another man, Sgt. Bob Velez said. “He was accusing her of having an affair with another person,” Velez said.

Police said Hobson had been drinking and that his breath smelled of liquor.

After searching unsuccessfully for his estranged wife, Hobson left the house and fired a shotgun at Kimberly Hobson’s car, police said. The blast left four small holes in the driver’s door, police said.

Hobson then drove his car down the street to his brother’s house at 6375 Ralston St., on the corner of Robin Avenue. In front of the house, he fired another shotgun blast at a pickup truck that belonged to one of his brother’s friends, police said.

Inside, Chris Barajas, 36, asked his brother to leave, but Hobson refused. Barajas then fled with his two children, Velez said.

Police arrived, sealed off a four-block area and surrounded the one-story house as neighbors gathered outside to watch. Two adjacent houses were evacuated.

After ignoring phone calls from police and demands for him to exit the house, Hobson emerged about 7:15 p.m. with his hands above his head. But he refused to lie down on the grass so police could take him into custody, Arth said.

Members of the SWAT team then “physically wrestled him to the ground,” Velez said.

Police said they found Hobson’s loaded shotgun hidden inside the house.

About 20 officers, including members of the SWAT team and detectives, were called to the scene, Velez said.
