A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

* FIREWORKS: Councilman Marvin Braude is requesting that Mulholland Drive between Encino Hills Road and Canoga Avenue be closed from 6 p.m. to midnight July 4 to prevent fires and injuries from illegally discharged fireworks. This unimproved portion of the road near the Santa Monica Mountains is popular with July Fourth celebrants.

* CRUISING: In an effort to prevent cruising on portions of Crenshaw Boulevard on Sunday nights, Councilman Nate Holden is requesting that temporary tow-away traffic signs be posted along the boulevard from 28th to 39th streets. Vehicles will be prohibited from stopping along that strip from 6 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday.

* GARLIC FESTIVAL: Approved a proposal to waive $4,416 in city permit fees for the installation of 96 street banners announcing the 10th annual Los Angeles Garlic Festival, to be held on the grounds of the Federal Building in Westwood on July 17-18.

* NEON HISTORY: Approved a request for a $9,500 grant from the California Council for the Humanities for the partial funding of a brochure about the historic neon corridor on Wilshire Boulevard.

RECREATION AND PARK COMMISSION

* GRIFFITH PARK STATUE: Approved a request to place a statue in Griffith Park honoring Col. Griffith Jenkins Griffith, who donated the park land to the city in the late 1890s. Venice artist Jonathon Bickart has been selected by the Griffith Park Trust, a private organization, to sculpt the statue.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

* HIV/AIDS GRANT: Approved a proposal to accept a $44,000 county grant to hire a specialist to provide homeless people living on Skid Row with educational information on HIV/AIDS and where to receive treatment. PASSED: 13-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, John Ferraro, Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky.

ABSENT: Ruth Galanter.

* LIQUOR STORES: Approved a proposal to provide business owners with an incentive not to rebuild liquor stores that were damaged or destroyed during last year’s riots. About $1.2 million in city permit fees would be waived for those owners who convert the former liquor stores to Laundromats. Businesses will have up to two years to convert. PASSED: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo.

ABSENT: Ferraro and Galanter.

ON THE AGENDA

* POWER BOATS: On Friday, the council is to discuss a proposal to prohibit the use of power boats on the Venice Canals, except boats being used by law officers on duty.
