Joe Carter, who had homered, singled home the winning run in the 12th inning for the Blue Jays’ sixth consecutive victory.

Carter led off the sixth inning with his 15th home run, making the score 2-2. It was Carter’s sixth homer against Frank Viola.

“Viola throws a lot of off-speed stuff and I’ve always had success against him,” Carter said. “I can’t remember the last time I faced Russell, but I do know he’s always given me a lot of trouble.”

Mike Timlin (1-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings, striking out Carlos Quintana with the bases loaded in the 12th.

Olerud singled to open the fourth, Tony Fernandez walked and Darnell Coles hit a run-scoring single with two out.

Oakland 4, Kansas City 1--Rickey Henderson homered to lead off the first inning and Bob Welch stopped a streak of seven winless starts to lead the Athletics at Oakland.

Henderson’s leadoff home run was his third of the season and 58th of his career, extending a major league record. He has homered seven times this year.

Welch (5-6) gave up eight hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Seattle 13, Texas 2--Ken Griffey Jr. hit two two-run homers as the Mariners completed their first three-game sweep of the Rangers in six seasons at Seattle.

Griffey hit his 101st homer to cap a three-run third inning against Charlie Leibrandt (7-4). Griffey hit his 15th home run of the season against Tom Henke to finish off a four-run eighth.

It was the eighth time Griffey has hit two homers in a game and the third time this season.

Detroit 7, Milwaukee 3--Mickey Tettleton hit a grand slam, highlighting a five-run first inning at Detroit.

Tettleton homered for the third consecutive day, the eighth time this month and the 17th time this season. He has hit two of Detroit’s four grand slams this season and has hit four in his career.

John Doherty (7-2) won his fourth consecutive start. Doherty, who skipped his last turn because of blisters, gave up only four hits in seven shutout innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Baltimore 6, Cleveland 3--Chris Hoiles homered, doubled and singled, helping Jamie Moyer and the Orioles beat the Indians at Cleveland.

The Orioles won two of three from the Indians and have won six consecutive series, their best such streak since they won seven in a row in 1986.

Moyer (3-3) gave up three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, sandwiched around rain delays in the second and fourth innings. He has won his last three starts, after going 0-11 in 16 starts before that.

Matt Young (1-5) took the loss without yielding a hit. He replaced starter Paul Abbott to start the fourth, after the second rain delay, and walked two before leaving with two out because of a sprained left knee. Harold Reynolds greeted Dennis Cook with a two-run double for a 4-2 lead. Reynolds had three hits.

New York 8, Minnesota 0--Bob Wickman improved to 8-0 as the Yankees swept a four-game series from the Twins at New York.

The Yankees have won nine of their last 11 to move 12 games over .500. Minnesota has lost six games in a row and the Twins are 0-7 against New York this season, having been outscored, 54-23.
