BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Boston’s Clemens Goes on Disabled List

Roger Clemens was put on the disabled list because of a groin strain, deepening the frustration in this half-season of injury and inconsistency for the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

Clemens, who battled an injured pitching elbow earlier this season, will be eligible to return to the embattled Red Sox, who have lost 16 of their last 20 games, on July 4.

The Red Sox, who put Clemens on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 19, said they will purchase the contract of minor league pitcher Aaron Sele to replace Clemens.

Clemens (7-6) aggravated the groin injury, which has been bothering him since mid-May, in the first inning of Boston’s 11-2 loss to the the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. He gave up six earned runs in two innings against the Blue Jays.
