Irvine Rejects Smart-Street Plan

Share

The City Council Tuesday night rejected a county proposal to turn Irvine Center Drive into a “smart street.”

The 4-0 vote came after more than a dozen nearby residents spoke against the plan, saying it would worsen noise pollution and traffic in the area.

The county sought to widen portions of Irvine Center Drive and transform it along with Edinger Avenue and Moulton Parkway into a major thoroughfare through the county.

“This project is not compatible with the community,” Councilman Barry J. Hammond said. “Why spend the money to take traffic off the freeways and put it on the streets of our community?”

The proposal would have involved synchronized traffic signals, double turn lanes and other features to improve the flow of traffic.
