SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Police are investigating a recent break-in, theft and vandalism of Councilwoman Jill Klajic’s Placerita Canyon home.

The councilwoman told police that the crimes, committed during the past three weeks, are politically motivated and intended to discourage her from seeking reelection in 1994.

“It seems to be a real orchestrated effort,” Klajic said.

Capt. Jerry Conklin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said deputies have responded to three calls from Klajic’s home this month and the department is investigating as it would any crime.

Klajic said her residence was broken into June 2 while she attended a Santa Clarita budget study session. Although no valuables were taken, two personal files were taken from a filing cabinet. One file included her high school report cards and another included correspondence pertaining to her divorce.

Klajic said she called sheriff’s deputies June 9 after she was awakened by a pipe clattering onto her back yard patio and again June 14 when the circuit breakers to her home were shut off while she was showering.

The most recent incident occurred Saturday, when Klajic said she discovered her phone line was dead. The phone wires had been ripped away from the outside junction box.

Conklin said there are no leads on the crimes and no evidence to indicate if political motivations were involved or not.

“Ms. Klajic is a local councilperson and is actively involved in the political arena. What role that plays in this situation, it is hard to tell,” Conklin said.

Klajic said she believes the crimes are part of a campaign being waged against her by those she has spoken out against during her time in office.

Although Klajic said she will continue her reelection campaign, the apparent personal attacks have had an effect upon her.

“It’s been discouraging this past week. I’ve been rethinking my goals in life,” Klajic said. “You just wonder if there isn’t somebody else who could be doing this (serving on the council).”

Klajic said she has been harassed before during her last two years on the City Council, with pornographic material anonymously mailed to her and messages sent to friends, warning them not to associate with her.
