A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

* FIREWORKS: Approved a proposal by Councilman Marvin Braude to temporarily close Mulholland Drive between Encino Hills Road and Canoga Avenue from 6 p.m. to midnight on July 4 to prevent fires and injuries caused by illegally discharged fireworks. This unimproved portion of the road near the Santa Monica Mountains is popular with holiday celebrants.

* BOAT BAN: Approved a proposal prohibiting the use of powerboats on the Venice Canals. The canals are undergoing extensive renovation and officials want to prevent powerboat use on the waterways after the remodeling.

* HOLLYWOOD CLEANUP: Approved a proposal by Councilman Michael Woo that allows any available funds from the city Department of Transportation and Metropolitan Transit Authority or other sources to be used to pay for the cleaning and maintenance services for those portions of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street located within the Hollywood Walk of Fame area.

* BLOCK PARTY: Approved a request to close Cherrywood Avenue between Rodeo Road and Coliseum Street from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 17 for the Cherrywood Avenue Block Club and Neighborhood Watch party in the Baldwin Hills area.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

* GANGS: Approved a proposal allowing increased police security at 20 city parks during the summer to provide more protection to the public from gangs. The council adopted this plan as an alternative to an ordinance that would ban gang members from recreation areas. An amendment to the proposal by Mark Ridley-Thomas creates a Safe Parks Task Force, which comprises officials from city departments who are to develop a more comprehensive plan to keep recreational areas safe. PASSED: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Nate Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo.

ABSENT: John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter and Zev Yaroslavsky.

* OVERTIME PAY: Approved spending $130,000 to pay overtime to firefighters who were on duty during the closing days in April of the federal trial in the Rodney G. King beating case. PASSED: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo.

ABSENT: Ferraro, Galanter and Yaroslavsky.

* ELECTION PAY: Approved spending $69,000 to pay overtime to city clerk employees who worked during the 1993 city elections. PASSED: 10-0.

ABSENT: Ferraro, Galanter and Yaroslavsky.

ON THE AGENDA

* TROLLEYS: On Friday, the council is scheduled to discuss the use of electric trolley buses on the streets of Los Angeles as part of the city’s mass transit plan.
