USC School of Architecture Offers Series of Symposiums

The USC School of Architecture is initiating a new program for the architectural community this summer with a series of two-day symposiums on topics ranging from health care architecture and planning, practice management and marketing to urban real estate, construction management and affordable housing.

The all-day symposiums will be offered on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August. Programs will be led by professionals and academics. They will include guest experts, case study analysis and, in some cases, site visits. Enrollment in each symposiums is limited. The cost is $245.

The 10 seminars are organized into two general areas. Symposiums on innovations and new ideas in management issues include:

--Practice Management: Organizing for Creativity with David Martin of A. C. Martin & Associates and Scott Johnson of Johnson, Fain & Pereira. July 9 and 10.

--Affordable Housing: The Interaction Between Design, Finance and the Community with John L. Gray, executive vice president of real estate for First Interstate Bank. July 16 and 17.

--Marketing an Architectural Practice: Position Your Firm for Success in the ‘90s with Sharlene Silverman, Ove Arup and Phyllis Dubinsky Klein, Ellerbe Becket. July 23 and 24.

--Real Estate Development: An Overview of Opportunities of the ‘90s with Doug Gardner, Maguire Thomas Partners. July 30 and 31.

--The Management of Construction: Latest Developments as They Affect the Architect with C. Terry Dooley, Morley Construction Co. Aug. 6 and 7.

--Housing the Aged: Design Options for a Diverse Population with Victor Regnier, dean of the USC School of Architecture and associate professor of USC Andrus Gerontology Center, and J. --Computer Applications: Design Explorations Through the Computer with Doug Noble and Karen Kensek, professor and lecturer in computer-aided design at the USC School of Architecture. July 23 and 24.

--Children’s Environments: Therapeutic Design Approaches for Pediatric and Day Care Settings with Anita Rui Olds, Anita Olds & Associates, Woodacre, Calif. Aug. 6 and 7.
