OXNARD : Man Gets Jail in Fatal Car Accident
A 23-year-old Oxnard man convicted of vehicular manslaughter after his passenger died in a car accident following a Christmas party last year was sentenced Thursday to 240 days in jail, followed by five years probation.
Paul Gilbert Manchego, who suffered a broken jaw in the Dec. 22 collision, already has been accepted into the county work-furlough program. He was sentenced by Ventura County Superior Court Judge Charles R. McGrath.
Manchego and Ernest David Barron, 29, of Ventura were leaving California 33 at Main Street in Ventura when the car Manchego was driving drifted off the roadway, hit a rock and crashed into a tree, investigators said.
Manchego had a blood-alcohol level of 0.22% at the time of the crash, according to the pre-sentencing report. Drivers are legally drunk when their blood-alcohol level reaches 0.08%.
Barron is survived by a wife and two children.
