THE WORD ON WHAT’S HIP AND WHAT’S HYPE

Wild, Wild Vest

It’s no news that Western wear is blazing. What is, says Pendelton Western wear merchandise manager Peter Bishop, “is anything Indian inspired, partly because Native Americans are part of this country’s great heritage.” To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Oregon Trail, Pendelton is drawing from the vivid American Indian designs that have covered the wool blankets they’ve made for 85 years. Take the Rustler Indian Jacquard vest ($85). “With vests so popular, and as the Western market continues to evolve, this converges two great trends,” he adds.

Sneaking Upward

Pumps, ballet flats and sandals have gotten elevated into platforms. So what’s next? Sneakers, according to perennially hip sports shoe maker Converse. “It’s the ultimate irony to have a sneaker on a platform,” says Baysie Wightman, worldwide creative manager. “It’s for the kids who follow pop culture fashion, and it’s the perfect shoe to wear to a club.” What’s more, teen boys can wear them too. Now available in a solid black high top and a multistripe low top for about $50. Coming for the holidays: a low-top model in wine-colored crushed velvet. Now that’s class.

Net Value

Among the more versatile trends this year: anything crochet. But don’t be a trendy knit-wit and overhaul your entire wardrobe. Simply add an item, such as a crochet halter top. Charlotte Russe buyer Sheri Coury suggests “dressing it up with flowy palazzo pants or a long, printed skirt, or mixing it up with denim shorts for a fun ‘70s approach.” Hook this sure-to-be-summer-favorite for only $19.

Mad About Max

Fans of Leon Max need no more trek north to La-La Land to his Max Studio boutiques. A sixth store opened last weekend at Fashion Island Newport Beach. No word on what took so long, but spokeswoman Staci Holister expects the “clothes to perfectly suit the casual O.C. lifestyle.” The 1,600-square-foot space resembles a loft gallery space, with a distressed hardwood floor, black and metal fixtures and hanging portraits of ads. Meet Mr. Max at a champagne reception July 17 from 4 to 7 p.m.
