DISNEY FRIENDS? Rep. Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove) met this week with Anaheim residents who will live near the Disneyland expansion to hear their concerns. . . . They had plenty: housing, crime, density, school overcrowding and property values. Umberg dealt firmly with the last one: “If this thing is done right, your property values should remain stable, or go up. If only Disney benefits from all this, we aren’t doing this right.”

AIR BREN: It’s UC Irvine’s Bren Center--not the sparkling new Anaheim Arena--that gets pro basketball Sunday, with the 29-day Asics Southern California Summer Pro League (C11). . . . Teams are a combination of NBA veterans--Byron Scott and Sedale Threatt among them--and wanna-bes who hope to impress a pro scout. For $6, fans can see up to four games a day. “We try to make this world-class,” says spokesman Larry Creger. “Spain, Israel, Italy, a lot of them get their talent out of this league.”

YOUNG SENIOR: When he inherited $25,000 after his father’s death, 24-year-old Lee McCamon wanted to invest in something responsible. He founded Senior Highlights, a monthly magazine for senior citizens. That was 10 years ago, and it’s grown from a one-man operation to a staff of 14 in Laguna Hills, and a multi-county circulation pushing 400,000. It’s also been pulling down national awards for the “mature market.” “I’ve never regretted my decision,” McCamon says. “We can make seniors’ lives better.”

KEEP THEM WORKING: With the national buzz about health care reform, some county officials have come up with a plan of their own. On Monday, the Transportation Authority board is expected to approve a six-year contract with 850 bus drivers which calls for a 3% annual pay hike. . . . But in addition, the board will agree to kick in a higher percentage of health insurance premiums if the bus drivers as a group significantly reduce the number of workdays missed because of worker’s compensation claims.
