A Canyon Country woman was killed Monday afternoon when her car was rear-ended by a drunk driver, knocking it into the path of oncoming traffic, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

The 59-year-old woman, whose identity was withheld until her family could be notified, was traveling west on Soledad Canyon Road, near the Sand Canyon Road exit in Santa Clarita, according to Lt. John Vander Horck.

“A car driven by Sylvester Hill, also of Canyon Country, rear-ended her and pushed her car into oncoming traffic,” Vander Horck said. A pickup truck traveling east struck her car head-on and continued over the top of the car, he said.

Hill, 45, was not injured but was taken the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia for a blood alcohol test. He was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and manslaughter and taken to the downtown County Jail, where he was held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

The driver of the pickup and a passenger in the woman’s car suffered moderate injuries in the accident and were taken to the same hospital.
