A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his roommate in the throat and back Tuesday during an argument over money, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Adan Ocampo was arrested after the stabbing occurred in the 1600 block of Calle Diamonte about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

When deputies arrived, they found Ocampo’s roommate, Juan Diaz, 34, outside his apartment. As deputies were administering first aid to Diaz, Ocampo surrendered.

Investigators said the attack occurred after the men began arguing over money. Ocampo grabbed a knife from the kitchen and confronted Diaz in a bedroom, where the two men struggled. During the scuffle, Diaz was stabbed three times in the throat, back and head, Detective Ernie Montagna said.

Diaz underwent surgery at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition late Tuesday.

Ocampo was booked into Ventura County Jail and was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Neighbor Doug Biasi said the attack was just the latest, albeit most serious, example of an upsurge in problems in the area.

“Since school’s been out, there’s been a lot more arguing, a lot more people passed out on the streets,” he said. “I’m moving out of here as soon as I can afford it.”
