A 23-year-old Oxnard man was in critical condition Friday after his girlfriend shot him in the face during a fight at her Ventura home, police said.

Officers found Ali Ostalaza bleeding from a single shotgun wound shortly after 2 a.m. at an apartment on West Simpson Street. He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he remained in intensive care late Friday.

According to police, the incident occurred when Ostalaza and Laura Lee, 31, began arguing in her apartment.

“That argument turned into a physical fight and she decided to retreat to her bedroom and try to keep him out,” said Sgt. Gary McCaskill.

Ostalaza grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and began pushing against the door, which did not lock. Lee got a 12-gauge shotgun in her bedroom and fired twice through the door, striking Ostalaza once, police said.

During the struggle, Lee’s roommate called police, who arrived shortly after the shooting. McCaskill said Lee believed Ostalaza was trying to kill her.

No arrests were made, but the shooting is still under investigation.
