Physics Teachers to Get Special Training
Three Ventura County teachers have been chosen for a program that will train 42 high school physics teachers from throughout Southern California to act as mentors to other physics instructors.
The program, funded through a $2-million grant from the National Science Foundation, is intended to alleviate the problem of high school physics teachers who struggle with the subject because they lack formal training in it, administrators said.
The teachers will serve as mentors and have the opportunity to complete requirements for a master of arts degree in teaching science from Cal State Fullerton, which is administering the grant jointly with Cal Poly Pomona.
The local teachers selected for the program are Steve Davis of Channel Islands High School, Larry Hilburn of Oxnard High School and Louise Komp of Ventura High School.
