VENTURA : City May Give $7,000 to Women’s Shelter
The Ventura City Council today will consider giving $7,000 to a shelter for battered women so it can retire its mortgage.
Officials at the Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence have approached city officials for federal grant money to pay off its mortgage early, said Community Development Director Everett Millais.
“It frees up cash flow for them,” Millais said. “I’m not aware that they had any particular trouble paying the mortgage.”
Shelter officials have been making regular mortgage payments, but “we’re always looking for money,” said Pam Cady, rape crisis program manager.
The shelter has been operating in Ventura since 1982. It is licensed to provide temporary housing for up to 17 women and children at any one time.
The coalition, which was founded in 1976, is a nonprofit organization associated with the United Way Foundation. A thrift shop in Ventura, run by the coalition, provides most of the coalition’s budget.
