First baseman-designated hitter Pete O'Brien was given his outright release to make room for Martinez.
Toronto Blue Jay third base coach Rich Hacker, recovering from a car accident during the All-Star break, has been upgraded to satisfactory condition. Doctors hope Hacker will be able to return to the field by next year. . . . Chris Hammond, who has a 10-6 record for the Florida Marlins, had trouble bending over because of a strained lower back, but he hoped to make his next scheduled start on Sunday.
