About the only thing Travis Fryman of the Detroit Tigers didn’t do Wednesday night was lead his team to victory.

That distinction went to Pat Kelly of the New York Yankees.

While Fryman was hitting for the cycle, Kelly was going two for four, with a home run and a career-high four runs batted in to lead the Yankees to a 12-7 victory at Detroit.

Fryman had the first five-hit game of his career and became the first Tiger to hit for the cycle since Hoot Evers against Cleveland on Sept. 9, 1950.

“Because of the result of the game, it doesn’t mean as much right now,” said Fryman, who had four RBIs. “But later, without the emotion, I’m certain I’ll appreciate it. I don’t think I’ve ever had five hits in a game before, either. Not even in childhood.”

Fryman’s cycle included his 12th homer. He doubled in the first, homered in the third, singled in the fourth and tripled in the sixth for his cycle. His fifth hit, a double, was the 500th of his career.

Don Mattingly and Paul O’Neill also homered for the Yankees, who had 18 hits, the most against Detroit this season.

Tiger starter John Doherty (9-6) was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Toronto 5, Baltimore 4--Cal Ripken Jr.’s error in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed Paul Molitor to score from third base, giving the Blue Jays a victory at Toronto.

Toronto retained its half-game lead over New York in the American League East.

John Olerud extended his hitting streak to 15 games with his 20th home run of the season, a solo shot off Fernando Valenzuela in the fourth inning.

Valenzuela, 3-0 with a 1.04 earned-run average in his last three starts gave up four runs and seven hits, striking out three and walking three, in 7 1/3 innings.

Chicago 9, Cleveland 4--Robin Ventura hit a first-inning grand slam and Bo Jackson added a three-run homer as the White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Indians at Chicago.

It was Ventura’s second grand slam this season--his 17th home run--and the fourth of his career.

Jackson’s three-run homer capped a five-run second and knocked out Albie Lopez (2-1). Lopez walked the bases full and Ellis Burks singled in two runs before Jackson’s ninth home run.

Cleveland’s Albert Belle had three hits, including a second-inning homer, his 29th.

Texas 10, Kansas City 3--Rafael Palmeiro’s second home run of the game capped a five-run fifth inning and powered the Rangers at Kansas City.

Palmeiro hit his 22nd home run in the fourth off Hipolito Pichardo (5-7). In the fifth, Palmeiro lined a two-run homer into the Kansas City bullpen.

Ivan Rodriguez went four for four and tied the Rangers’ record with eight consecutive hits over two games. The major league record is 12.
