The Tustin Unified School District has been awarded a $50,000 state grant to design a program to improve child care, safe recreation, health care and other services for children and their families.

The Healthy Start Planning grant, to be used for school year 1993-94, was given to the Robert P. Heideman and Jeane Thorman elementary schools, but will be used for all students of the district, said student assistance coordinator CynDi Glavas.

Glavas said the grant is part of the state program to improve the physical and mental health of schoolchildren through proper nutrition and health care.

An example of such a program is Camp Tustin at Robert Heideman Elementary School, where about 150 children participate in a variety of recreational activities and receive a free lunch during the summer, she said.

Parent volunteers help run the camp, she said.

She said there are plans to expand the program to include nurses visits, immunization and dental care.

About $400,000 is needed to expand the program, Glavas said. A team composed of representatives from the school district, the city of Tustin and other public agencies as well as community leaders will seek funding from the state, she said.

A similar team wrote the proposal that won the $50,000 state grant, Glavas said.
