VENTURA : Suspect in Rape Case Pleads Not Guilty

A Ventura man accused of raping and trying to kill a 14-year-old girl last April pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges in Ventura County Superior Court on Monday.

An attorney for Dallas Carter said that in the past his client claimed he heard voices and spoke to the devil. But Carter, 24, behaves normally when he takes his medicine, said Gary Windom, the deputy public defender who represents Carter.

Carter, who already has been evaluated by at least one psychiatrist, will be reviewed by two more specialists before his Sept. 20 trial.

He is accused of strangling a 14-year-old girl until she was unconscious and then raping her last April 21 at his girlfriend’s home after all three had attended a party earlier in the evening.

Carter remains in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
