SIMI VALLEY : 16 Sex Education Panelists Selected

Share

Simi Valley school officials have selected most of the members of a committee that will recommend what birth control information should be given to students in sex education classes.

The 25-member panel will include educators and members of the Parent Teacher Assn. In addition, a physician, a pastor and several people from the community at large were randomly selected to participate from among a group that expressed interest, officials said.

Sixteen members have been picked so far. Still to be chosen for the committee are nine other members, to include students, principals and a school nurse, officials said.

The first meeting will be held in September.

School board members stressed that the role of the panel is not to debate whether or not birth control should be taught in school. Instead, the committee is expected to choose appropriate birth control information to include in the curriculum for board members to consider.

Other committee members chosen so far are: Sandy Barnett, Barbara Tone, Patricia Proffit, Dr. Louise Garcia, Lorraine Young, Sheila Robbins, Norma Wallace, the Rev. Myles Gentzkow, Caryl Barefoot, Barbara Paharik, Glenn Woodbury, Carolyn Dyer, Loretta Archibald and Eleda Grizzell.
